DADU: More than 40 people including women and children were martyred and over 100 sustained critical injuries in a suicide attack at the shrine of Sufi Saint Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sehwan Sharife on Thursday. Thousands of devotees from across the country arrive at the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar every Thursday.
Police have confirmed it was a suicide blast. Police officials in Sehwan said the blast took place inside the shrine with the Assistant Superintendent of Police Rashid stating it was a suicide bombing. Local Journalist said the condition of more than 50 pilgrims is critical, the number of death toll could rise as there is only one small hospital in the area. However, emergency has been declared in the hospitals of Hyderabad, Dadu and Jamshoro. Police and security forces have cordoned off the area.
Chief of Army Staff, General Qamar Javed Bajwa has directed immediate assistance to Sehwan blast victims. DG ISPR in his tweet said Army and Rangers personnel have been moved with medical support. Hyderabad CMH is ready to receive casualties, the Major Gen. Asif Ghafoor said.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has strongly condemned the blast. “Sufi saints played a major role in the foundation of Pakistan,” the prime minister said, in a statement. This is an attack on Pakistan’s future. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, in his statement, pledged to deal with the perpetrators iron-handedly. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the shrine blast. Several other attacks this week, including a bomb that killed 13 people in Lahore, were claimed by the terrorist outfit Jamaat-ur-Ahrar faction.
